Careers in Clothing/Garment Industry

The fashion and clothing industry makes a wide variety of products which require different marketing and production considerations.

The jobs people do in the industry vary considerably according to the type and size of company and the market. The larger companies, often making staple products, employ staff at various levels who specialise in a narrow range of expertise e.g. work study engineer, quality controller or machinist doing a short single operation.

The smaller, often high fashion companies, frequently based in metropolitan cities require staff who possess a range of skills over a number of jobs. People working in this type of company can be switched and adapted to changing needs of the buying public.

The job of the designer, in fact, varies considerably from company to company. In a large firm he or she, may have to produce a large number of design ideas but all within a fairly narrow range of price, style and type of fabric. In a small firm supplying boutiques the demand will be for many more original ideas, style, shape silhouette, colour and fabric.
In some situations the designer will be expected to produce ideas and sketches only: in other there may be a requirement to produce the pattern, the sample garment, and perhaps to prepare everything for production in the factory.
