What Some Foreign Universities Offer
(i) The scholarship/fellowship schemes given here are open only to Indian national residing in Indian;
(ii) Look for notifications in the Employment News and leading newspapers during the months indicated under each country/scheme. The notification will furnish more details/clarifications;
(iii) Some of these schemes stipulate two or three years consecutive stay by candidates in India after return from abroad for study/training;

National Overseas Scholarship given by the Union Ministry of Welfare
Level: Under-graduate, Post-graduate, Research/specialised training.
Subject: The scholarships will be awarded in subjects for which suitable facilities are not available in Indian. Preference will be given for Automation and Robotics, Laser Technology, Naval Architecture/Offshore Structures, Paper Technology, Printing Technology, Reliability Engineering.
No. of Scholarship: 60 (for Indian)

Eligibility: The scholarships are awarded to candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Identified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes. The income limit of parents/ guardians or the applicant himself/herself is fixed at Rs.5,000 per month for eligibility of the award.

Age: 35 years.
Value: $ 5,940 per annum for the Bachelor’s degree.
$6,660 per annum for the Master’s and  Ph.D. degrees.
$ 7,700 per annum for post-doctoral research/training.
An additional allowance for books and equipment.

Procedure: Further details regarding minimum qualifications for each subject and the terms and conditions of the scholarship can be obtained by sending self-address, unstamped envelope (28* 12cms) marked ‘Request for application form for National Overseas Scholarship’ to the Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Welfare, SCD Division, Scholarship Cell Room No.240, ‘A’ Wing, Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi-110001.
Closing Date: May 15 of the year of award.

Commonwealth Academic Fellowships/Scholarship (UK)
Level: Advanced Study.
Subject: No restriction (excluding medicine, surgery and dentistry). For commonwealth Medical Awards, Contact; Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Nirman Bhavan, New Delhi.
Number: Unspecified.
Duration: Fellowships-10 months (Oct.July), Scholarships-2 years (extendable). Fellowships are intended for young, established teacher and/ or research experience.

Placement by Commonwealth Scholarship commission, U.K. Scholarship are offered for post-graduate or above level studies leading to university degree or diploma.

Age limit: fellowship-preferably between 28-40 years, Scholarship-preferably between 22-28 years extendable up to 35 years.

Value of Fellowship/Scholarship-Fellowship: Airfare to UK and back by economy class, maintenance allowance₤ 621 to ₤ travel within UK, clothing allowance ₤ 197 on arrival.


Eligibility: Nomination through Vice-Chancellors of universities. Open To University teachers and professors.
 Direct applications not entertained.

John Crawford Scholarship Scheme (ADCOS) (Australia)
Level: Master’s Degree.
Scholarship: 12Ph.D
Allocation: 50 per cent slots of scholarship are earmarked for female candidates.

Subjects: Engineering, Technology and Science.
Fields: Aeronautical engineering, electronic engineering, industrial design, instrument technology, information technology, manufacturing engineering, mineral processing engineering, mining engineering" community health, computer science, agricultural science. Humanities and Social Sciences; Art conservation, Architecture, Demography, Economics, Educational administration, English literature, Environmental studies, Fine arts, History, International business, Mass communications, Managements studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Populations studies, Special education, Sociology, Urban and regional planning.

Eligibility: Age for Master's Degree: 21-40 years; for Ph.D: 25­- 40 years.

Qualifications: Master's Degree/Bachelor’s degree in the subject with 60% marks. Candidates have to submit one page academic justification for going to Australia.

Ph.D. Master's Degree in the subject with 60 per cent marks. Candidates have to write a description (500 words) of his/her proposed study abroad specifying title; hypothesis of research, methodology, institutions in India and Australia where such studies are done.

Additional Requirements: Candidates must have completed tertiary education in English medium; 2 years consecutive stay in India after return from abroad for study/training/specialisation. Candidates who have already obtained Master's/Ph.D. degree need not apply for the same degree course: equivalent foreign degree is considered.
Selection: On merit.
Value / Passage Cost: Full tuition Fees, economy class air fares to Australia and back; adequate living allowance to cover housing and food.

Procedure: Typed application (in prescribed format) with attested copies of testimonials, photographs, programmes of study/research and other documents may be submitted on plain paper in English. Employed persons have to send their application through employer. Nehru Centenary British Fellowship/Awards, Level: Studies leading to a Ph. D. Duration: Upto 3 years.
Awards: 15     
Notification: December.
Subject / Fields: Energy conservation; small business development in rural areas. (Subjects are likely to be changed every year). Chemistry, English literature, Economics, Electronics, Indian studies, International relations.

Age: 34 years. Upper age limit is relaxable by 2 years in case of SC/ST candidates..
Qualifications: Uniformly good academic record with a first class (60 per cent marks). Master's degree in the subject/related field. Where grades are awarded the candidates are required to furnish exact percentage of marks.

Additional Requirements: Two years consecutive stay in India after return from, abroad for studies/training/specialisation; adequate knowledge of geography, culture and heritage of Britain. Candidates who have been awarded scholarships in any scheme need not apply undert4is scheme.
Selection: Based on merit after interview.

Value / Passage Cost: Air fares, tuition fees and living expenses in Britain.

Procedure: Application on plain paper in prescribed format (in triplicate) along with copies of testimonials, photograph, programme of study/research another documents may be sent to the notified authority by the prescribed date. Applications should have the approval of the Head of Department where the applicant is in the Government Service.
Academic year Commencing from: October.

Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Trust (UK) Scholarship
Level: Advanced Research for Ph.D. and post-doctoral research. Duration: 1 year and 3 years.
Notification: August.
Subjects / Fields: Bio-technology, Computer Science, Economics, Management, Mass communication, Microelectronics. Candidates should have secured admission at a British University/advanced research institution.
Age: 30 years (32 years for SC/ST).

Eligibility/Qualifications: Uniformly brilliant academic record, preferably Ph.D. in the subject/related field or published work of equivalent merit. Candidates having Master's Degree should have 2 years teaching/research experience. (Where grades are mentioned, candidates should indicate numerical conversion of their marks).Candidates should produce evidence of their capacity for intensive scientific investigation/research/specialised work.

Additional Requirements: Candidates should be 'fluent in English and have knowledge about UK and 2 years consecutive stay in India after return from abroad for study/research.

Value:£ 8000 Per year (subject to revision) is paid by-the British Council on behalf of the Trust in addition to allowances to cover arrival, departure expenses, books, clothing, study visits, thesis expenses. There is no provision for dependents.

Passage Cost: India-UK return ticket is provided by Government of India.
Procedure: Typed application (in prescribed format) with attested copies of testimonials, two character references, programme of research and other documents is required to be sent on plain paper. Employed candidates are required to send their application through their employer. Advance application with enclosures may be considered. Application of candidates belonging to All India Services is considered when received through Cadre Controlling Ministry.
Academic Year Commencing from: October.

Confederation of British Industry (CBI) Overseas Scholarships
Level: Advanced professionals.
Duration: 4 - 12 months.
Scholarships: 4.
Notification: February.
Subject / Fields: Civil Engineering-Structural f'3sign; Transportation Studies; Port and Harpour Engineering Highway design/Construction; Geotechnical Engineering. Electrical/Mechanical Engineering; Building services (installations); Railway signalling; Communication network Software applications.

Eligibility: Working in civil/electrical/mechanical engineering industries especially from those who have collaborative agreement with UK firms.
Age: 33 years (35 years for SC/ST).
Qualifications: Uniformly good academic record with 60 percent marks in B.E. (civil/electrical/mechanical) with 5 years professional experience after the qualifying standard. Awards are intended for young professional engineers and not for senior personnel/academic staff.

Additional Requirements: Adequate knowledge of India and UK. Two years consecutive stay in India after return from abroad from study/training/specialisation.

Sponsorship: The candidates should be sponsored by the employers and are expected to return to their job on completion of their training in UK and undertake to serve their employer for 3 years. Preference to candidates from Public Sector Undertakings, Bureau of Public Enterprises, FICCI and industries which have collaboration with industries in U.K.

Value: £ 6,720 per annum-free from the UK Government income tax or any other statutory deduction.
Passage Cost: India-UK is payable by the Scholar/employer homeward journey (UK-India) is provided under CBI scheme after completion of the course, provided the training is for a minimum of months.

Procedure: Typed application (in prescribed format) with attested copes of testimonials, photograph, programme of study/research and other documents may be submitted on plain paper. Employed persons should send their applications through proper channel. Advance application may be considered provisionally if the original is received within two weeks. 

British Technical Cooperation Training Programme
Level: Educational Training and Development. Duration: 10 months.
Awards: 20 Awards. They are intended to be source of support of the educational development programme complementing projects activities and focussing attention on educational institutions which have a coordinated programme for strengthening their teacher      development and/or research capacity.
Notification: December
Subjects / Fields: Vocational Education Trainers (Polytechnic institutions; Educational Project Management (NCERTIRCES);School Examinations Development.
Eligibility: Serving teachers.
Age: Below 45 years.
Qualifications: Good academic record with Post-graduate degree in the subject/related field with 5 years professional experience. Candidates who had received training during last 3 years are not eligible.

Nominations: Concerned educational agencies may nominate persons through the prescribed format and forward it by the notified date.
Academic year: Commencing from June onwards.

Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship (St. Anthony's College, Oxford)
Level: Advanced Research.
Duration: 2-3 years.
Notification: October.
Subjects / Fields: Modem Indian Studies in History, Economics, Political Science.
Age: 30-40 years (30-42 years for SC/ST).
Qualifications: Uniformly brilliant academic record (with 60 per cent marks at Master's degree level) with Ph.D. degree if the subject field or published works of equivalent merit.

Value / Passage Cost: Stipend of£ 10,000 per annum and economy class air passage (both ways) borne by the Government of India.

Procedure: Typed application (as per prescribed format) with attested copies of testimonials, photographs, programme of study/research and other documents may be submitted on plain paper. Employed candidates should send their application duly sponsored by their employer.

Commonwealth Countries
Level: Higher Studies/Research Training.
Duration: 3 years.
Countries: UK, Canada and Hong Kong.
Nominations: 70 (Double the number are nominated to the donor country).
Notification: September.

Common Requirement/Value of Scholarships: Age: Below 34 Year (years for SC/ST). Preference to, candidates below 30, years. Candidates who have already appeared for interview more than twice are not eligible.

Scholarships cover tourist-class air (both ways) fees, adequate maintenance and other allowances.
