MARINE RADIO OFFICER

Marine career related courses offer a viable alternative to school-leaving students. Marine Radio/Electrical Officer course holds bright prospects for students in the Science stream at the plus-two level. A number of marine Radio Colleges have come up in metropolies to cover the syllabus laid down by the Ministry of Shipping.

The minimum eligibility condition is Matriculation and the minimum age is 17 years. There is no maximum age limit. The academic qualification is 10+2 with Science; Maritime Careers can be divided into three branches, viz.,

(i) Operating;
(ii) Engineering; and
(iii) Radio Communications electronics ship-operating staff.

The Engineering Branch handles mechanical and electrical machinery boarding the ship. A modern sailing vessel is highly mechanized and stress on automation has made it a complicated unit. Bulk requirements of this branch are met by the graduates of Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET) in Kolkata. Several other institutes in India also offer this course.

For manning the ship operations, candidates have to appear in the TS Chanakya Entrance Examination under the Ministry of Shipping and Transport for the office rank operating branch. A candidate has to be 10+2 qualified and has to compete in an examination at part with IIT Engineering Colleges Entrance Examinations.

But it is the Marine Radio Officer (MRO), who handles the vital function of radio communications for the ship. For this purpose, one has to take up the Marine Radio Officers Course. These courses in ROGC, COP, RTG, RTR, RTIM are internationally recognised. Examinations for these courses are conducted by the Ministry of Communications, Government of India. Besides, there is also the Ham (Amateur) Radio Operators License to be worked for. There are other courses, too, such as the Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems (GMDSS) and Marine Electronics course.

Students completing the Radio marine Officer's course get comfortably placed in Indian and foreign companies with starting salaries in the range of Rs. 1600-1800 a month. So, if you are young hard working and have an interest in electrical gadgetry, desire to visit places and earn a substantial pay packet, an MRO course is just right for you.
