German Academic Exchange Service
Level: Advanced Study/Research.

Special Features: Scholars working for their Ph.D. (except those applying under the sandwich-model) are expected to complete their doctorate thesis before their departure.

The "Sandwich Model" multi-phase scheme offers the applicant to carry out his research in India and Germany under the supervision of an Indian/Germany under the supervision of an Indian/German Guide according to previously drafted schedule.

The research stay in Germany is not limited to a single visit; the fellowship holder could either complete his research at a German university/institute in one stage or carry out part of the work there, return to his home institute to continue the work and later visit Germany again; visit of Indian supervisor to the German University/ Institute for consultation while the Ph.D. candidates are working there; visit of the German Guide to India for consultation.

Period of fellowship is preceded by a compulsory four months of German language course to be conducted at one of the branches of the Goethe Institute in Germany.
Subjects: Humanities & Social sciences; Natural science.

Eligibility: Employed/Sponsored Indian nationals (residing in India) from the staff of Universities/IITs/IIMs, agricultural, veterinary and Forestry Institutions."
Age: 32 years (34 years for SC/ST).

Qualifications: Uniformly good academic record with 60 percent marks at Master's degree in the subject/related field. Candidates from the fields of Sociology and Economics should possess adequate knowledge of German language. (Conversion formula should be given where grades have been awarded).

Experience: Two years consecutive teaching/research/Practical training after obtaining the prescribed qualification. M.Phil. degree is counted as one year's experience. Preference is given to candidates having contacts with German Professors/placements at the German institutes. Letters from German Scientists/Professors confirming that the proposed research could be carried out at their institutes are required to be furnished. Additional Requirements: Sufficient knowledge about Germany.

Value of Fellowship: (A) Maintenance allowance of DM 1490 per month. (B) Free passage from New Delhi to the place of study in Germany and back. (C) Exemption from payment of university fees. (D) Clothing allowance of DM 400. (E) Baggage allowance of DM 150 each way. (F) Additional allowance of DM 200 per year. (G) Book allowance of DM 200 per year. (H) Allowance for charges for compulsory health insurance DM 600 per year. (I) Tuition fee, boarding, lodging plus pocket allowance during the period of the German language course (Preceding studies/Research).

Procedure: Typed application, duly sponsored by employer with search programme, attested copies of testimonials and other documents may be submitted on a plain paper (as per notified format) by the prescribed date. Advance application may be considered if it is subsequently received through the employer within two weeks."
