Combined Matric Level Exam.
The Combined Matric Preliminary Examination is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission for selecting candidates for the Main Examination for the following Recruitments:
A. Clerks Grade, in the pay scale of Rs. 3050-4590/- for the following Groups:
Group 'X'
Indian Foreign Service (B) Grade VI,
Railway Board Secretariat Clerical Service, Grade-II,
Central Secretariat Clerical Service Lower Division Grade,
Armed Forces headquarters Clerical Service Lower Division
Grade,
Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs.
President's Secretariat,
Election Commission of India.

Equivalent/comparable posts in subordinate offices of Govt. of
India located throughout India, Offices of the Comptroller and
Auditor General of India, Accountant General (Audit) and Accountant General (Accounts & Estt.) in various states, Controller General of Defence Accounts, Central Vigilance Commission.
The posts under Group 'X' are in the Ministries/Departments of the Central Government and mostly located in Delhi. The posts under Group 'Y' are mostly in the subordinate and other offices of the Central Government and located in different States/Union Territories.
B. Grade 'D' Stenographers in the pay scale of Rs. 4000-6000/- for the following groups/services.

C. The recruitment to the posts of Grade C Stenographers in Pay Scale of Rs. 5500-9000 for the following groups of services Offices:
A. Indian Foreign Service (E).
(Grade II of the Stenographers Cadre)
B. Railway Board Secretariat Stenographer Service Grade 'C'
C. Central Secretariat Stenographers Services Grade 'C'.
D. Armed Forces Stenographers Service Grade 'C'/
E. Posts of Stenographers in other departments/Organisations and Attached Office of the Govt. of India not participating in the LF.S. (B)-Railway Board Secretariat Stenographers Service/Centre Secretariat Stenographers Service/Armed Forces Headquarters Stenographers Service.
A candidate may compete in respect of anyone or more of the Services/Posts mentioned above.

2. The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the Combined Matric Prelim Examination once a year generally in the month of May for selection of candidates for the Main Examination. The Main Examinations for the above mentioned posts are held at the end of the year.
Blank application forms and other particulars are published in the Employment News, usually in the month of December of the previous year. These can also be obtained from the Bright Careers Institute, 1525, Nai Sarak, Delhi-110006 by remitting Rs. 5.00 by money order or on cash payment ofRs.2.00 at the counter of the Institutes showroom. The last date for submission of applications is usually the last week of May.

3. Age: Candidate must have attained the age of 18 years and must not have attained the age of 27 years as on the first-day of August of the year of examination.
4. Educational Qualifications: Must have passed Matriculation or equivalent or higher examination as on first day of August of the year of examination.
5. Plan of Examination (Prelim.): The Combined Matric Preliminary Examination is a test for selection of candidates for the Main Examination for the different categories of posts mentioned in first paragraph. The written exam will comprise one paper with two parts:

N .B.: The questions in all the tests will be “Objective-Multiple Choice- Type" .Candidates will be required to qualify in each of the two tests separately. The questions will be set in English and Hindi.
6. Syllabus (For Prelim. Exam.):
(i) General Intelligence: The syllabus for General Intelligence would include questions of both verbal and non-verbal types. The test may include questions on analogies, similarities, differences, space visualisation, problem solving, analysis, judgement, decision making, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, arithmetical number series, etc. The test will also include questions designed to test the candidate's abilities to deal with abstract ideas and symbols and their relationships, arithmetical computations and other analytical functions.
(ii) General Awareness: Questions will be designed to test the ability of the candidate's general awareness of the environment around him and its application to the society. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of an educated person. The test will also include, questions relating to India and its neighbouring countries especially pertaining to History, Culture, Geography, Economic scene, General Polity and Scientific Research.
6. Staff Selection Commission holds separate Main Examinations for only such candidates who are declared qualified in the Preliminary Examination (Matric Level).

Skill Test: Stenography Skill Test-300 marks-80 words per minute. Stenography test is conducted for those candidates who qualify in the Main Examination.
Note: The candidates who opt for Hindi/English in General Studies Language Comprehension paper have to take the Skill Test in Hindi/English as the case may be.
8. Syllabus (For Mains Exam.)
For Clerks-I. General English: In addition to testing the candidates understanding of the English Language and its correct usage, his writing ability would also be tested. Questions on paragraph writing/report writing/letter writing etc. may be included.
2. General Studies: Questions in this component are aimed at testing the candidates general awareness of the environment around him and its application to society. Questions are also designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observations and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of any educated person.
The test also includes questions relating to India and its neighbouring countries especially pertaining to History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Polity, Scientific Research, etc. These questions are such that they do not require a special study of any discipline.

Arithmetic: Questions on this component covers number system including questions on simplification, decimals, fractions, LCM, HCF, Ratio and Proportion, Percentage, Average, Profit and Loss, Discount, Simple and Compound Interest, Mensuration, Time and Work, Time and Distance, Tables and Graphs, etc.
.For Grade 'D' Stenographers-I. General Studies: Questions in this component are aimed at testing the candidates general awareness of the environment around him and its application to society. Questions are also designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observations and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of any educated person. The test also includes questions relating to India and its neighbouring countries especially pertaining to History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Polity, Scientific Research, etc. These question are such that they do not require a special study of any discipline.
2. Language Comprehension (Hindi! English): In addition to testing of candidates understanding of the Hindi/English Language and its correct usage, his writing ability would also be tested. Questions on-paragraph writing/report writing/letter writing, etc. may be included.
For Grade 'C' Stenographers-I. General English: In addition to testing candidates understanding of the English Language and its correct usage, his Writing ability-would also be tested. Questions on writing of paragraph/report/letter precis, etc. may be included.

Questions are designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observations and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of any educated person. The test also includes questions relating to India and its neighbouring countries especially pertaining to History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Polity, Scientific Research, etc. These questions are such that they do not require a special study of any discipline.
Paper-II Essay: Candidates are required to write Essay on two topics. They will be expected to keep closely to the subject of the Essay, to arrange their ideas in orderly fashion and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact expression.
Typewriting Test/Shorthand Test: The candidates who qualify the Main Examination(s) will have to undergo a Typewriting Test/Stenography Test as the case may be.
