Combined Defence Services (C.D.S.) Exam..

The Combined Defence Services Examination is held twice a year generally in the months of February and August for admission to:
(i) Indian Military Academy (I.M.A.), Dehradun;
(ii) Naval Academy, Goa;
(iii) Air Force Academy, Begumpet, Hyderabad; and
(iv) Officers' Training Academy (OTA), Chennai (Short-service
Commission-N on-Technical).

All particulars are published in the Employment News usually in the months of October and March respectively. The complete Application Form, along with an Information Brochure containing general instructions for filling up the form, an Acknowledgment Card and an Envelope for sending the application can be obtained only from anyone of the Designated Head Post Offices/Post Offices throughout the Country.

2. Age: (i) For IMA: Unmarried male candidates between 19-24 years on 1st January or 1st July of the year succeeding the year of examination.

(ii) For Naval Academy: Unmarried male candidates between 19-22 years on 1st January or 1st July of the year succeeding the year of examination (24 years in case of Naval Wing 'C' Certificate holders).

(iii) For Air Force Academy: Unmarried male candidates between 19-23 years on 1st January or 1st July of the year succeeding the year of examination.

(iv) For Officers' Training Academy: Male candidates (married or unmarried) between 19-25 years on 1st January or 1st July of the year succeeding the year of examination.

3. Educational Qualifications: (i) For I.M.A. / O. T.A. : A degree from a recognised University or equivalent.
(ii) For Naval Academy: B.Sc. with Physics and Mathematics or Bachelor of Engineering.
(iii) For Air Force Academy: B.Sc. of a recognised University or equivalent with Physics and/or Mathematics as subjects or Bachelor of Engineering.

4. Plan of the Examination: The examination comprises: (a) Written Examination as shown in para 5 below; and
(b) Interview for intelligence and personality test of such candidates as may be called for interview at one of the Services Selection Centres.

5. Examination Subjects: The following will be subjects for the written examination:
(a) For admission to Indian Military Academy, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy:
(i) English
(ii) General Knowledge
(iii) Elementary Mathematics

(b) For Admission to Officers' Training Academy (0. T.A.) :
(i) English
(ii) General Knowledge
N.B.: (i) The papers in all subjects will consist of OBJECTIVE­ TYPE (Multiple-Choice questions only). The question papers will be set in English only.
(ii) Each paper will be of 2 hours duration and will carry 100 marks.

6. Standard of Examination: The standard of the paper in Elementary Mathematics will be of the Matriculation Examination.
The standard of papers in other subjects will approximately be such as may be expected of a graduate of an Indian University.

7. Syllabus
(i) English: The question paper will be designed to test the candidates understanding of English and workman-like use of words.
(ii) General Knowledge: General Knowledge, including knowledge of current events and such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific subject. The paper will also include questions of History of India and Geography of a nature which candidates should be able to answer without special study.

(iii) Elementary Mathematics-Arithmetic: Number system, Natural numbers, Integers, Rational and Real numbers.,
Fundamental Operations-addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square roots, decimal fractions.

Unitary method-time and distance, time and work, percentages, applications to simple and compound interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, variation.

Elementary Number Theory-Division algorithm. Prime and composite numbers. Tests of divisibility by 2, 3, 4, 5, 9 and II. Multiples and factors. Factorisation Theorem, H.C.F. and L.C.M., Euclidean algorithm, logarithms to base 10, laws of logarithms, use of logarithmic tables.

Algebra: Basic operations, simple factors, Remainder Theorem, H.C.F., L.C.M., Theory of Polynomials, Solutions of quadratic equations, relation between its roots and coefficients (only real roots to be considered). Simultaneous linear equations in two unknowns-analytical and graphical solutions. Simultaneous linear in equations in two variables and their solutions. Practical problems leading to two simultaneous linear equations or in equations in two variables or quadratic equations in one variable and their solutions. Set language and set notation. Rational expressions and conditional identities. Laws of indices.

Trigonometry: Sine x, Cosine x, Tangent x when 0° x 90°. Values of sin x, cos x and tan x, for x = 0;, 30;, 45;, 60; and 90;. Simple trigonometric identities.
Use of trigonometric tables.
Simple cases of heights and distances.

Geometry: Lines and angles, Plane and plane figures. Theorems
on (i) Properties of angles at a point, (ii) Parallel lines, (iii) Sides and angles of a triangle, (iv) Congruency of triangles, (v) Similar triangles, (vi) Concurrence of medians and altitudes ,( v ii) Properties of angles, sides and diagonals of a parallelogram, rectangle and square, (viii) Circle and its properties, including tangents and normals, (ix) Loci.

Mensuration: Areas of squares, rectangles, parallelograms, triangle and circle. Areas of figures which can be split up into the figures (Field Book). Surface area and volume of cuboids, lateral surface and volume of right circular cones and cylinders. Surface area and volume of spheres.

Statistics: Collection and tabulation of statistical data. Graphical representation-frequency polygons, histograms, bar charts, pie charts, etc. Measures of Central Tendency.

8. Intelligence and Personality Test: In addition to the interview, the candidates will be put to Intelligence Tests, both verbal and non-verbal, designed to assess their basic intelligence. They will also be put to Group Tests such as group discussions, group planning, outdoor group tasks, and asked to give brief lectures on the specified subjects. All these tests are intended to judge the mental calibre of a candidate. In broad terms, this is really an assessment of not only his intellectual qualities but also his social traits and interests in current affairs.

9. Physical Standards: Good physical and mental health and free from any disease/disability which is likely to interfere with the efficient performance of duties. There should be no evidence of weak constitution, bodily defects or over weight. The minimum acceptable height is 157.5 cm (157 cms for Navy and 162.5 cms for Air Force). For Gorkhas and individuals belonging to hills of north Eastern region of India, Garhwali and Kumaon, the minimum acceptable height will be 5cms less. In case of candidates from Lakshadweep, the minimum acceptable height can be reduced by 2 cms. These concessions are not applicable for Navy and Air Force.

10. Initial Pay: About Rs. 10,000/- in the scale of Rs. 8250-300-10050.
