Dichloro Methane or Methylene Chloride (CH2Cl2): A colourless volatile liquid b.p. 40.1°C. It is used as a solvent , are refrigerant and as a anaesthetic.

Dichroism. Refers to the property of some crystals, such as tourmaline, of selectively absorbing light vibrations in one plane while allowing light vibrations at right angles to this plane to pass through. Polaroid is a synthetic dichroic material.

Dicyanodiamide. or cyanoguanidine [H2NC(NH)NHCN]: A white crystalline substance m.p. 208°C., used in the manufacture of melamine and of barbiturates and other drugs.

Dicyclopentadiene. A colourless solid, m.p. 32°C and has a characteristic odour.

Dielectric constant. The capacity of the solvent to weaken the forces of attraction between the electrical charge immersed in it.

Diels-Alder reaction: A method of preparing a benzene ring from a diene and a compound containing a single double band (e.g., maleic acid). Named after Otto Diels (1876-1954) and Kurt Alder (1902-58).

Dienoestrol. (C18H18O2): A colourless crystalline powder m.p. 233°C, obtained by reducing p-hydroxy propiophenone. It has oestrogenic properties.

Diesel fuel. Intermediate and heavy fractions which are obtained in the dilution of petroleum and used as fuel in engines where ignition occur because of compression.

Dietericis equation : A modification of Vander Waal’s equation, in which accounts is taken of the pressure gradient at the boundary gas. It is written.
P(V—b) = RTe- a/RTV

Where a and b are constant characteristics of each gas; at relatively low pressures.

Diethyl Ether.  See Ethoxy Ethane.

Diethyl Malonate. Or Malonic Ester [CH2(COOC2H5)2]: A colourless liquid (b.p. 472 k) with a pleasant odour. It is insoluble in water, miscible with organic solvents. It is used to prepare various organic compounds.

Diethyl sulphate. (C2H5O)2SO2. A colourless liquid with a faint ethereal odour : b.p. 208°C (decomp). Manufactured by leading ethene under pressure into 100% sulphuric acid. It is decomposed by boiling water. Reacts with hydroxy-compounds and amines to give ethers esters, amines and amines. Used as an ethylating agent in organic syntheses. Highly toxic by skin contact.

Differential titration. Analysis of a sample which contains two or more similarly reacting species which are differentiated, e.g. use of different bases or indicators.

Diffraction pattern. A beam of X-ray or electrons passed through a crystalline solid produces a diffraction pattern on a photographic plate.

The pattern is due to the
