Carenes.
Dicyclic terpenes. Colourless oils found naturally.

Carmine.
A red lake pigment once obtained by extracting cochineal with boiling water precipitating the extract with alumina. The modern equivalent is known as alizarin carmine, a like prepared from 1,2 dihydroxy-anthraquinone.

Carnallite.
KCl, MgCl2, 6H2O. A principal component of many salt deposits. Used as a source of potassium salts.

Carnosine.
β-alanylhistidine, C9H14N4O3 .
M.p. 245-250°C (decomp) A dipeptide present in mammalian muscle. Like anserine it contains the amino-acid β-alanine which is not found in proteins.

Carnotite.
KUO2 VO4, 1.5H2O.An important uranium ore.

Carnot’s cycle.
A hypothetical scheme for an ideal heat machine. It shows that the maximum efficiency for the conversion of heat into work depends only on the two temperatures between which the heat engine works, and not all on the nature of the substance employed.

Carrier gas.
The gas that able to the sample in gas chromatography.

Carron oil.
A mixture of vegetable oil (Cotton-seed or olive) with a lime water. It is used as an application for burns.

Carvacrol.
[CH3)2 CH C6H3CH3OH]. a colourless liquid b.p. 237.7°C with a minty like odour. It is used as a disinfectant and in perfume.

Carvene or Carvol (C10H14O).
An optical active ketone related to terpenes, b.p. 231°C. It is found in essential oils and used in perfumes and flavours.

Cast iron.
A group of iron alloys containing 1.8 to 4.5% of carbon. It is usually cast into specific shapes ready for machining, heat treatment, or assembly. It is sometimes produced direct from the blast furnace or it may be from semelted pig iron.

Castner kellenr cell.
An electrolytic cell for the manufacture of sodium hydroxide.

Castor oil.
A vegetable oil taken out from the seed the castor plant It is used in the paint and varnish industry as well as medically as a laxative.

Catalysis.
Refers to a change of a reaction rate in the presence of a catalyst. Catalysts may speed up the reaction or slow it down to almost complete suppression. The phenomenon is widely employed in industry.

Catenation.
The electrode which pulls the electrons from he external circuit or at which reduction occurs.

Catholyte
The electrolyte near the cathode during electrolysis.

Cation.
A positively charged ion obtained by removal of electrons from atoms of molecules.

Cauris method
The halogen containing organic substance is heated with fuming nitric acid in the presence of silver nitrate in a sealed glass tube. Silver halide is formed and this estimated gravimetrically.

Castor oil.
Fixed oil expressed from the seed Ricinus communis. It consists almost entirely of the glyceryl esters of ricinoleic acid. It is miscible with alcohol. It is a mild purgative. Used industrially for the manufacture of dehydrated castor oil and also in the production of polyurethanes.
