Azimuthal quantum number.
The quantum number that defines the shape of the orbital of an electron; it also defines that sub-shells. Its symbol is 1.An s- orbital has 1 = 0; ap-orbital has 1 = 1; a d – orbital has 1 = 2.

Azines.
Compounds containing C = N – N = C groups prepared from C = O compounds and hydrazine. Also used for compounds containing multiple N2 groups and azine dyes.

Azoic dye.
Water insoluble azo dyes also known as ice-colours and ingrain colours. In use they are formed within the fibre.

Azulene (C10H9)
A blue violet crytraline solid with a naphthalene like small m.p.99°C.

Azurite.
Co3(OH)2(Co3)2 Blue basic carbonate of copper. An artificial form is known as Blue Verditer of Blue Ashes and is used as an artist’s colour.

B
Boron

Ba
Barium

Babbit metal.
It is used for making bearings. They consists of tin containing antimony (about 10%) and copper (1-2%), and often lead. A type of alloys with high proportion of tin and small amount of copper and antimony.

Baking powders.
Substitutes for yeast used in baking depending for their action on the slow evolution of CO2. They consist of various acid substances (potassium hydrogen tartrate, calcium hydrogen phosphate, sodium hydrogen phosphates) with NaHCO3 or NH4HCO3 together with added inert materials such as flour or starch.

Babo’s law.
The vapour pressure of a liquid is decreased when a solute is added, the amount of the decrease being proportional to the amount of solute dissolved.

Back titration.
A method of volumetric analysis where excess of one reagent which reacts with the substance to be determined is added to the solution to be estimated and the excess of reagent is estimated.

Bacteriocidal.
Capable of killing bacteria. Common bacteriocides include some antibiotics antiseptics and disinfectants.

Baddeleyite.
A kind of ZrO2 and a main mineral source of Zr.

Bag filter.
A type of air filter.

Bakelite.
A trade name of Phenol-formaldehyde (phenol-methanal) plastics and resins; a very widely used range of plastic materials.

Balance.
An apparatus used for weighing. Sensitive balance operate on a lever principle, less sensitive balances can used springs. The most sensitive balances-electrobalances-carbon weigh to a sensitivity of 0.1mg.

Ball Mill.
A big barrel containing iron balls moves to crush the ore to a powder.

Balmer series.
The visible spectrum of hydrogen of a series of sharp distinct lines, the wave length λ of which may be represented by the formula:
1/λ = R Balmer series

. n = 3, 4, 5 etc.: R = Rydbrog’s constant. It is named after J.J.Balmer.
