Atomic pile.
Another name for a nuclear reactor.

Atomic radius.
The distance between the nucleus and outer boundary of the electrons. Since a free uncombined atom has no sharp boundary to its mobile electrons, could, it is not possible to measure atomic radius for individual atom. The values, however, are derived indirectly from its inter-nuclear distance. Half the internuclear distance is taken to be the atomic radius of the atom.

Atomic structure.
An atom consists of a positively charged nucleus, surrounded by electrons. The negative charge on the electron is equal to the positive charge on the nucleus making the atom. neutral.

Atomic volume.
The volume occupied by 1 gram atom of an element is defined as atomic volume. The atomic volume is obtained by dividing the atomic weight of the element by its density.
A volume = Atomic volumeAtomic density
Atomic volume is a periodic function of the atomic number. Lother Meyer was the first who proved the validity of the rate. Elements that exist in a number of different allotropic crystalline forms would apparently have more than one atomic volume.

Atto (a).
A prefix denoting 10-18. For example, 1 attometer (am) = 10-18 meter (m).

Atomic weight.
Defined relative to 12Cas 12.0000 atomic weights are ratios of masses and are not to be confused with the actual mass of an atom. Also termed relative atomic mass.

2-chloro-4-ethylamina-6-isopropylamino-1, 3, 5-triazine, C8H14ClH5. A soil-acting herbicide with some contact action. Colourless, m.p. 173-175°C. It is widely uses as a selective pre-and post-emergence herbicide or many crops including maize, sorghum and sugarcane. It is relatively non-toxic to animal life.

Atrolactic.

Aufbau principle.
In building up the electronic configuration of an atom or a molecule in its ground state, the electrons are placed in the orbitals in order of increasing energy.
