Amyl acetate.
Or pentyl Acetate or Banana oil (CH3COOC5C11): An ester of amyl alcohol and acetic acid. A colourless liquid b.p. 1480C with an odour of pear drops.
Obtained by heating amyl alcohol with potassium ethanonate and sulphuric acid. It is used as solvent for cellulose, acetate lacquers and paints. It is also used in perfumes and flavours

Amyl ether.
A colourless liquid with pleasant odour, b.p.172.5-1730C. It is obtained by heating amyl alcohol with sulphuric acid. It is used as a high boiling ether type solvent and as a solvent for fats and essential oils

Amyl alcohol (C5H11OH).
A colourless liquid with a characteristic smell. It exist in various isomeric forms. Commercial amyl alcohol is mainly iso-amyl alcohol, b.p. 131.40C. It is obtained from fused oil and used as a solvent

Amyl group.
Formerly any of several isomeric group with the formula C5H11.

Amylopectin.
A polysaccharide comprising highly branched chains of glucose molecules It is one of the constituents (the other being amylase) of starch

Amylose.
A polysaccharide consisting of linear chains of between 100 and 1000 linked glucose molecules. Amylose is a constituent of starch. In water, amylase reacts with iodine to give a characteristic blue colour

Anabolism.
The metabolic synthesis of proteins, fats and other constitutents of living organisms form molecules or simple precursors. This process required energy in the form of ATP.

Analgesics.
Compounds which reduce pain perception, e.g. morphine

Analysis.
The determination of the components in a chemical sample. Qualitative analysis involves determining the nature of a pure unknown compound or the compound present in a mixture. Various chemical tests exist for different elements or types of compound, and systematic analytical procedures can be used for mixtures. Quantitative analysis involves measuring the proportions of known components in a mixture. Chemical techniques for this fall into two main classes; volumetric analysis and gravimetric analysis. In addition, there are numerous physical methods of qualitative and quantitative analysis, including spectroscopic techniques, mass spectrometry, polarography, chromatography, activation analysis etc.

Anatase.
TiO2. A steel blue or yellow form of Tio2.

Anation.
Replacement of an uncharged ligand, e.g., H2O, in a complex by an axion, e.g., CI

Andalusite.
AI2SiO5. A form of aluminium silicate. Used as a refractory material in the manufacture of electrical porcelain (spark plugs), firebricks and for metallurgical furnace linings.

Andrews titration.
An important titration for the estimation of he reducing agents. The reducing agent is dissolved in concentrated hydrochloric acid and titrated with potassium iodate (V) solution. A drop of carbon tetrachloride is added to the solution and the end point is indicated by the disappearance of the iodine colour from this layer. The reducing agent is oxidized and the iodate reduced to ICI, i.e. 4-electron charge

Anemometer.
An instrument for measurement of gas velocity

Anethole.
1-methoxy-4-prop-1-enylbenzene, C10H12O. while leaflets, with a strong smell and sweet taste, m.p. 220C, b.p. 2350C. The chief constituent of anise and fennel oils and other essential oils, from which it is manufactured. It can also be prepared form anisole (methoxybenzene). It is used in medicine, flavouring and in perfuming

Angelic acid, cis 2-methyl-2-butenoic acid,
C5H3O2Mp 45-46 C. b.p. 185C. It occurs free in the roots of Angelic archangel lice.

Anhydride.
A substance formed by elimination of one or more molecules of water form one or more molecules of an acid, or (less frequently) a base. Thus phthalic acid on heating gives phthalic anhydride. Similarly, sulphur trioxide, SO3 is the anhydride of sulphuric acid, H2SO4.
