Applications for PNAs
Since DNA-probes have been utilized in the past rather effectively, one may like to ask, if there is enough justification for the use of PNAs in place of DNA oligonucleotides as molecular probes.  Following are the reasons for using PNAs in place of DNA probes, atleast in specific situations :
(i) The greater association constants for PNA hybridization will increase the rate of recognition and allow the use of lower concentration of oligomer, thus improving throughput and reproducibility, while reducing the cost.
(ii) The enhanced  affinity of PNA binding will allow recognition of binding sites at lower ionic strengths and higher temperatures.

A variety of applications for PNAs have been described, which involve the following attributes/uses :
(i) antisense inhibition,
(ii) SI-targeted DNA cleavage and inhibition of cleavage by restriction enzymes,
(iii) detection and analysis of mutations,
(iv) nucleic acid purification,
(v) isolation of transcriptionally active genes,
(vi) enhanced PCR amplification,
(vii) blocking of the binding of transcription factors,
(viii) inhibition and monitoring of telomere length,
(ix) use in biosensors,
(x) inhibition of translation by PNA clamps,
(xi) in situ hybridization and
(xii) alternative to Southern blotting.
