Sexing of embryos using PCR
Since DNA sequences in single cells can be studied using PCR, sex of human or livestock embryos, fertilized in vitro, can be determined before implantation. For this purpose, PCR primers and probes specific for sex chromosomes (e.g. ZFY or ZFX sequences) can be used. Y -specific primers and probes in humans are available for this purpose. This technique can also be used to detect sex-linked disorders in the fertilized embryos.
