Methods of proteome analysis

It was only in 1990s, that biological mass spectrometry emerged as a powerful tool for protein analysis. This development, received a boost with the accumulation of genome sequences, since functional analysis of gene products and their interactions now became an important area of research under the broad discipline of proteomics. However, the large scale study of three dimensional structure of proteins (gene products) is not included und r proteomics and is instead sometimes included d under the title of 'structural genomics'. In USA, in the year 2000, a five years Protein Structure Initiative (PSI) was launched with seven collaborative projects at a cost of US $150 mil1ion sanctioned by National Institute of General Medical Science (NIGMS).
