Functions of all the ptoteins of yeast worked out
Complete sequence of -the whole genome of yeast was worked out in the year 1996, which suggested the presence of nearly 6,200 genes in this unicellular eukaryotic organism. More recently, in the year: 2001, functions of 93% of the proteins (5,800 proteins) encoded in the genes were also elucidated (www.newswise.com July 30; 2001). It is believed that this information will be very useful for the study of the functions of human genes, since yeast is the simplest eukaryote, whose proteome has been studied in such a great detail.
