Synthetic oligonucleotides as probes

DNA probes with known nucleotide sequences can also be synthesized chemically using automated DNA synthesizers no available commercially. These synthetic probes will be efficient only when they are not more than 20 to 40 nucleotides in length.

Use of SSRs or simple sequence repeats (like di-, tri- or tetranucleotide repeats) for oligonucleotide fingerprinting is one example of the use of synthetic oligonucleotide probes.
