Centres of Plant Molecular Biology (CPMBs)

To give the desired boost to programme of crop improvement through biotechnology, six centres for Plant Molecular Biology (CPMBs) were established by DBT at the following institutions:

(i) MKU, Madurai; (ii) JNU, New .Delhi; (iii) Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore;
(iv) Osmania University, Hyderabad; (v) Bose Institute, Kolkata and (vi) National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), Lucknow.

Another CPMB was later added to this list and is located at Plant Molecular Biology Department at University of Delhi South Campus (DUSC).

The CPMB at JNU in New Delhi has recently been merged with recently created National Centre for Plant Genone Research (NCPGR), which has been created by a grant of Rs. 20 Crores from the Department of Biotechnology.

Unfortunately, atleast in some of the above institutions, despite massive funding, no significant contribution could be made in the area of plant molecular biology.
The impact of the establishment of these centres on biotechnology research in India, therefore, will be known only in the early decades of 21st century.
