Biotechnology and Genomics in India

As mentioned earlier, the' leaders in biotechnology and genomics research are countries like U.S.A., Japan and those in Europe. However, in India also at the 69th session of Indian Science Congress held at Mysore in 1982 Indian Scientists emphasized the importance of gene technology.
Consequently, on the recommendations of Science Advisory Committee to Parliament, Government of India constituted a National Biotechnology Board under the Department of Science and Technology to coordinate and encourage research in this direction.

National Biotechnology Board (NBTB) decided to compile a list of biotechnologists in India and abroad working in the following fields

(i) genetic engineering, (ii) photosynthesis, (iii) tissue culture (iv) enzyme engineering, (v) alcohol fermentation and (vi) immunotechnology.

In view of the significance which is attached to biotechnology, a separate Department of Biotechnology in the Ministry of Science and Technology was created d by Government of India in the year 1986. An International Centre: for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) for developing countries under the auspicies of United Nations was also established.

This centre has two locations, one in New Delhi, India and the other in Trieste, Italy.

The centre in India started operating in 1987.

Biotechnology centres in India, have also been established at (i) Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, (ii) National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) Karnal and

(iii) Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) Izatnagar (U.P)

The centre at IARI was named as “Lal Bahadur Shastri Centre for Advanced Research in Biotechnology”, which was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on 4th October 1988.

This centre came into operation in 1993 and is now known as National Center of Plant Biotechnology Research (NCPBR).

Other centres, which came into existence towards the end of 20th century with the assistance from Department of Biotechnology,

Government of India, include ‘National Centre for Plant Genome Research (NCPGR) located at JNU Campus, New Delhi, ‘National Centre for Brain Research (NCBR)’ located at

NII Campus, New Delhi, and the ‘Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics’ (CDFD) locaked in Hyderabad.
