Commercial Market and Future of Biosensors
Development of biosensors for commercial use is still in its infancy and has been rather slow, although research in this area predicts their use for solving many problems. Consequently, only a handful of biosensors could be developed and that too, primarily for medical diagnostics. An ideal biosensors should possess a number of features illustrated in and it is difficult and expensive to develop biosensors with all these attributes. Therefore, only selected features are incorporated in practical biosensors, keeping in view the benefits, it will offer to the user. Although a demand for biosensors for medical diagnostics may certainly rise, the next wave of biosensors that will be produced in the 21st century will address applications in environment monitoring and the food and drink industry.
