Biosensors for general industry (including fermentation industry)
Biosensors can also be used an analysers for specific chemicals for process control in a variety of industries including pharmaceuticals, chemical and petroleum, mining and construction industries. Although, the conditions in some of these industries may be too harsh for biological sensors, there is considerable promise in this area. In fermentation industry, biosensors can be used for monitoring the cultured microorganisms producing drugs, hormones, vaccines, single cell proteins, etc. Some biosensors have already been produced for fermentation industry (e.g. Thresh-oldTM from Molecular Devices Corporation). Biosensors can also be developed for alerting workers for the presence of hazardous substances in the industrial atmosphere.
