Bioinformatics instituted (NCBI, EBI, SIB, etc.)

During 1988-1998, several bioinformatics institutes were established in different parts of the world for the creation, development and management of databases and dataBanks

National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).
In the year 1988, NCBI was created in U.S,A with an objective to perform basic research in the field of computational molecular biology. It supports a number of databases and makes available a number of databases and makes available a number of data mining tools for a variety of purposes (Fig 12.2) It was given the mandate to develop and distribute genomic sequences in the form of GenBank (a nucleutide sequence database). That was originally developed by Department of Energy (DOE), Los Alamos National Laboratory. The other databases available at NCBI site include dbEST, dbSTS, PDB, MMDB (molecular modeling database), dbSNP, dbGSS (Genome survey sequences), HTFS (high throughput genome sequences)

NCBI also provides common services like PubMed and BLAST. Other services provided by NCBI include the following: (i) Entrez. It is a search engine, which allows easy access to biographic citation and biological databases including the identity of genes and pattern of inheritance for these disorders. (iii) Taxonomy. It contains taxonomic information of individual plant and animal species, for which sequence information is available in the database (iv) Structure. It provides a variety of software tools relevant to structural analysis of macromolecules
