European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI).

It was created in 1992-93 by EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory) and was located at Hinxton, near Cambridge in UK. EMBL itself was established in 1980, initially as a Nucleotide Sequence Database, which was Europe’s sole collection of nucleotide sequences. Although EMBL still provides useful services, its database is now maintained by EBI’s Network services, which allow free access to the most up-to-data data collection via internet and www interface, EBI’s Sequence Retrieval System (SRS) is a network browser for databanks in molecular biology, integrating and linking a number of nucleotide and protein database.

For sequence similarity search also, a variety of tools (e.g. BLITZ, FASTA, BLAST) that are available at EMBL, allow external users to compare their own sequences against the most up-to-data currently available data in the EMBL Nucleotide Sequence Database, which had 9.6 gigabases of sequences on September 1, 2000.
