BLAST (later versions)

New versions of BLAST are constantly being produced for a variety of purposes to increase the penetration power of this programme. The later versions of BLAST which became available in 2001-02, had some new sequence alignment tools that are useful for extracting useful and new information from the query (input) sequence. These tools included the following: (i) VecScreen gives an output, which lists all segments of the query that closely match any of the sequence in the Univec database including sequences of plasmids, phage, cosmids, BACs, PACs and YACs.  (ii) IgBLAST facilitates analysis of immunoglobulins sequences in GenBank. It reports the three gennline V -genes, two D-genes and two I-genes, that show the closest match to the query sequence.

(iii) MegaBLASTa is a multiple alignment tool, with the help of which a set of ESTs is compared with a set of genes and sufficiently similar EST sequences are grouped together in clusters for further studies involving EST mapping, etc. (iv) SNP BLAST gives an output, which lists all high confidence SNPs available in the SNP database (dbSNP) in the sequences that correspond the query sequence. (v) PowerBlast is a new network blast application for automatic analysis of genomic sequences. PowerBlast combines blast searching with additional filtering for low complexity regions and repeats. It features one to many alignment outputs showing alignment of the query sequence with all matching sequences, in contrast to the earlier versions that could give only one to one alignment output.
