Sources of Man - made Pollution

Authorised discharges of wastes into water bodies is causing a great havoc. There are very many ways by which a pollutant can enter water:
1.Point source.
When total flow is conveyed in well defined channels like municipal or industrial discharges.

2. Diffuse source.
Sprayed pestcides and fertilisers are important sources of diffuse pollution. Community waste waters. It includes discharge from homes, commercial and industrial establishment connected to public sewage system

Community waste waters.
It includes discharge from homes, commercial and industrial establishment connected to public sewage system. Composition of sewage vary from place to place. Major components are human and animal excreta, food residues, cleaning agents, detergents and other wastes. It is rich in bacteria and organic substrates. Sewage harbours in it an increased microbial activity and decomposers. Scum and sludge formed by organic wastes makes the water unfit for recreation and industrial use. It includes growth of algal bloomes. Phosphates present in detergents stimulate algal growth thus adding to organic loading of water.

Industrial effluents/wastes.
Composition of industrial wastes depends upon the form of industry and type of water processing employed and its bye-products.
