Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is the process by which chlorophyll containing cells synthesize carbohydrates from carbon-dioxide and water using the energy of sunlight. It is the most important biological process as it provides food to the biological world.  Photosynthesis in short may be summarised as follows :

    Sunlight
6CO2 + 12H2O -------> C6H12O6+ 6H2O+ 6O2
    chlorophyll

About 170 million tonnes of dry matter are produced by this process. Only 0.2% of light energy is utilized by photosynthesis organisms.
