Water Resources

4/5th of earth’s surface is covered by water. Two major water resources available on earth are :
1. Fresh Water Resources
Only 3% of total water is available as fresh water. Fresh water is a finite resource. through global hydrological cycle ocean maintains a perennial flow of fresh water. Fresh water has multiple applications in daily human life. India has vast fresh water stretches in form of rivers (27360 km), canals and irrigational channels (112650 km). However there are some problems confronting this limited resource :
1. Deforestation has reduced water absorption, storage in catchment areas and has led to soil erosion and floods.

2. Misuse and abuse of fresh water in domestic fields and industrial field.
3. Large scale pollution that has destroyed purest form of natural water¾rain water
4. While seeping through soil various salts gets dissolved and results in problems like hardening of water As soil content of 3.5 gm/litre of water is safe for irrigation.

Modes of Water Conservation
1. Treatment of water to be used for irrigation
2. Prevention of wastage of water in industries and homes.
3. Prevention of water pollution by not allowing raw sewage and industrial effluents to pass into water bodies.

4. Building of dams to store flood water for use during dry periods.
5.Proper afforestation of hills and landscapes.
6. Building of tanks, ponds and other types of water reservoirs

2. Ocean Resources
About 70% of earth’s crust is covered by oceans. As compared to other natural resources ocean resources are still untapped but man is gradually heading towards exploitation.
1. Oceans are a source of fish. The global animal fish catch is about 73 million tones of which India’s share is 2.5 million tones.
2. A number of kelps and red sea weeds are edible. The algae are rich in minerals and vitamins

3. common salt is extracted from sea water
4. They are exploited for transportation between different parts of world.
5. Pearl industry flourishes at he expense of ocean
6. Oceans possess a number of nearly pure mineral concentrates as-nodules (manganese nodules).
7. Petroleum and natural gas are oceanic in origin
8. Ocean tides can be used in generation of electricity.
9. Marine plants are source of Algin (Laminaria, Macrocytis, Nereocystis for toothpastes, cosmetic creams, shaving cream etc.), Agar (from red algae¾Gelidium and Gracilaria), Carrageenan (red algae Chondrus, an emulsifier stiffening and clearing agent), Funoran (glue from red algae Gloiopeltis), Diatomite (Siliceous deposits of diatoms for filtration, clearing agent, insulation, shining paintsetc.)
