Living Resouces

They include plants, animals and microorganisms :
Plant resources
Plants are basis of biotic existence. They are the producers providing food for the whole living world. They provide food, fodder, fuel, clothing shelter, medicines, paper and raw materials for various industries.
Agriculture is a mode by which man harness the plat resources to meet his ends. forests also provide him with rich and fine variety of raw materials. Barring regions covered by permanent snow, bare rocks, dry sand and man-made structures almost entire surface is inhabited by plants. Over 4 laks species of plants are found on earth.

Of the 380 thousand million tones of dry biomass produced 325 thousand million tones is added by marine plants. Although plant resources are renewable but human activities like deforestation, overgrazing, conversion of climax communities to cropland and sever environment pollution are causing damage to plant life and rich vegetation.

Animal Resources
Animals maintain ecosystems. Many animals, insects, help in pollination and dispersal of fruits and seeds. Being heterotrophic they participate in biodegradation of organic compounds. Animals provide various kinds of food, fibres, leather, manure and chemicals etc. Animal protein is the most animals are hunted for fun, fear, skins, perfumes and medicines.
Killing of animals disturbs the delicate balance of nature causing damage to wild life, forests and nearby villages. A total dependence on animal food is disastrous and hence a delicate balance between vegetarian and non-vegetarian diet has to be maintained.

Micro-organisms
Micro-organisms are small organisms not visible with naked eyes. they exist almost everywhere and were first seen by Anton von Leeuwenhock (1632¾1723). Major groups of micro-organisms are bacteria, protozoa fungi and viruses. Bacteria are most active microorganisms in breaking down complex molecules and help in recycling wastes (E-coli is harmless bacteria of intestine of man and other mammals where it synthesize certain vitamins).

Together with bacteria fungi play a critical role in recycling materials¾Penicillin¾a medicine to treat bacterial infections is a product of fungus. Protozoa are harmful as well as beneficial. The skeletal deposits of foraminifera ad radiolarian are found in association with oil deposits and thus help in location of this important fuel. Protozoa form food of many aquatic animals. All viruses are harmful and cause different types of diseases.
