Alternations in Environment

Manipulation of the environment at the hands of man has occurred through physical conditions, change in biotic community and depletion and degradation of natural resources

1. Physical conditions.
Through his notorious acts man has disturbed physical conditions of environment. He has cut down forests for wood, farm land etc. He has also put grasslands to use. Big factories and dug many canals, lakes and tanks for irrigation and transport and drains for sewage. Though these are great chievements but at a high price, ecological balance in nature has been disturbed.

2. Biotic communities.
A biotic community is an assemblage of plants, animals and micro-organism which live together, share some habitat and influences each others life. As a member of biological community man was (i) a prey of carnivorous animals like tigers, lions and crocodiles (ii) a host for many parasitic worms. When man built his houses, animals like-cockroaches, lizard and mice started coming to his houses.

These animals are Inquilines. Many cultivated plants like cabbage, tomato, maize, wheat also require human help for their cultivation. These are called Cultigens.
Man has transplanted many organism to new habitat.
(i) Parthenium hysterosphorus (carrot grass) introduced in India since 1956.
(ii) Clover and bumble bee to New Zealand and Merino sheep to Australia.
(iii) As agents of biological control-Cochineal insect to Australia to control Opuntia.
(iv) Water hyacinth to India as a material of fancy.

3. Depletion and degradation of natural resources.
Because of our complete dependence on fossil fuels the world’s energy resources have reached a critical stage. Modern industrial and aviation technology is polluting the air and life saving ozone layer is being destroyed causing a threat to climate and environment. Pollution of water is a threat to rich diversity of fresh water and marine water species. Over-exploitation and mismanagement pose a great threat to land resources. Depletion of almost all known mineral deposits of the world are anticipated over further years. Various humans activities like deforestation, environmental pollution, habitat destruction, funhunting are great danger to both plant and animal life.
