Anatomy of Flowering Plants

Tissue. It is a group of similar cells which have a common origin and function to perform. Tissues are primarily of two types¾meristematic and permanent.

Meristematic Tissue
A meristematic tissue is composed of similar and immature cells that are capable of dividing and forming new cells. The characteristics of meristematic tissue are
1. Cells are isodiametric, rounded, oval or polygonal in outline
2. Their walls are thin and cellulosic.

3. They lack intercellular spaces.

4. They have dense, granular cytoplasm and conspicuous nuclei.

5. They retain the power of division.

6. They lack plastids and vacuoles.

7. They do not store reserve food and are in active state of metabolism.
