Origin and Activity of Cork Cambium
Soon after start of secondary growth in vascular regions, certain cells of pericycle become meristematic and begin to divide to form cork cambium or phellogen. It produces secondary tissues towards inside and outside.
The tissue formed towards inside id parenchymatous and is called secondary cortex or phelloderm. The cells produced on outer side become suberized and dead to form cork or phellem. At places phellogen produces parenchymatous cells to give rise to lenticels. Phellem, phellogen and phelloderm are called periderm. It is protective in function.
