3. Other Relationships

(a) Scavenging.
Certain animals feed on dead bodies of other animals which have met with their natural death or killed by any other organisms. e.g. jackals, foxes, hyenas.

(b) Amensalism.
It is a negative interaction between the two individuals in which one does not allow the other to live or grow near it. Inhibition is achieved by secretion of chemicals called allochemics e.g. Penicillin does not allow the growth of staphylococcus bacteria.

Leaf Butterfly of India Which When Resting Resembles a Dead Leaf
Protective Resemblance of Insects a Moth Larva which Resembles a Twig
Protective Resemblance of Insects a leaf Insect of South America Which in Form and Colour Resembles an Assemblage of Leaves

[A. Leaf butterfly of India which when resting resembles a dead leaf, N. a moth larva which resembles a twig, C. a leaf insect of South America which in form and colour resembles an assemblage of leaves.]

(c) Mimicry.
It is a special type of adaptive association which makes an organism or plant resemble its surroundings to derive benefit like (i) Protection; (ii) Predation. Organism which shows mimicry is mimic and the object it resembles is called model.

Mimicry employed by prey is called protective mimicry like stick insect-Carausius morasus, deadleaf butterfly-Kalima parolecta. Mimicry employed by predator is called aggressive mimicry like-leaf insect-Rhyllium frondosum, Praying mantis-Mantis religiosa.

Biological Control.
It is keeping the population of an organism/harmful pests and weeds under check by means of their natural predators, parasites and amensols. e.g. Weed opuntia and cactoblastis, parthenium and zygogramms.
