Forms of Parasitism

(i) Ectoparasites and Endoparasites. Ectoparasites live on the body of host while Endoparasites live inside the body. Ectoparasites are-head louse, bed bug and mosquitos.
Endoparasites are Malarial parasite, Trichinella (pin worm), Taenia, Ascaris, Trypanosoma.

(ii) Temporary and permanent parasites. Tem porary parasites live in contact with the host only for a part of their life while permanent ones live in contact with the host throughout its life e.g. Ascaris, Taenia.

(iii) Holoparasites and Hemiparasites . Holoparasites are those which are completely host dependent like Rafflesia, Cuscuta. Hemiparasites receive only a part of the nourishment from the host, rest they manufacture by themselves e.g. Viscum, Loranthus.

(iv) Stem and Root Parasites. Plants parasites parasitic on stem are stem parasites (Cuscuta, Loranthus, Viscum) while those parasitic on root are root parasites (Rafflesia, root nematodes).

(v) Hyperparasite. It refers to a parasite living on another parasite. e.g bacteriophages, ciccinobolus cesatii (powdery mildew).

(vi) Sexual Parasitisim. In some fishes a curious adaptation has evolved to ensure that the two sexes will be in proximity to reproduce. In the early stage the male becomes attached to head of female and fuses with it.

Sexual Parasitism in the Deep Sea Angler Fish

Sexual parasitism in the deep-sea angler fish. [Photocorynus spiniceps, in which the difficulty of one sex finding the other is met by permanent attachment of the much smaller male to the female. The union is so complete that the male has no independent existence at all, being nourished by the blood of the female to which he is attached].
