Biotic Succession/Changes in a Community

Every community undergoes a series of changes till it finally reaches a stable state called climax community which is in perfect harmony with the environment. A biotic community is influenced by biotic factors, physico-chemical-factors and geographic factors. These factors determine the existence of a particular species in a particular environment. Any change in these factors brings about a change in the habitat of an area and can act as a source of succession.

The entire sequence of development stages of a biotic succession is known as sere. Each sere is composed of a number of biotic succession replacing one another in course of time. The first biotic community which develops in a bare area is called Pioneer community. To have a better understanding take e.g. succession on a bare rock.
