A. Recycling of Materials (Biogeochemical cycle)

Circulation or exchange of biogenetic nutrients between living and non-living worlds is called biogeochemical cycling. The whole of biogenetic nutrients are not always in circulation. Nutrients occur in two states-reservoir pool and cycling pool.

(a) Reservoir Pool.
It is the reservoir of biogenetic nutrients from which they are very slowly transferred to the cycling pool e.g. N2 of atmosphere.

Recycling of Materials Biogeochemical Cycle

[Carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen and many minerals pass cyclically between the living (plants, animals, microbes) and nonliving (atmosphere, soil, water) components of the system, being used and reused indefinitely.]

(b) Cycling Pool.
It is the pool of biogenetic nutrients which is repeatedly exchanged between biotic and abiotic components of biosphere.

Cycles of matter are of two main types: gaseous and sedimentary.

(i) Gaseous cycles. For gaseous cycles reservoir of material is atmosphere or water. Biogenetic materials involved are carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, water. They are quick and take little time to complete.

(ii) Sedimentary cycles. It involves materials like: Phosphorous, sulphur and calcium. Reservoir is lithosphere. They are very slow.

Both sedimentary and gaseous phases occur in case of sulphur.
