B. Phosphorus Cycle

Phosphorus is an inorganic component of nucleic acids, phospholipids, ATP, bones ad teeth. It takes part in metabolic reactions involving release of energy from food and utilization of this energy in body functions. Phosphorus is used as phosphates. Atmosphere or gaseous cycle is absent. In nature it is found in soil, as rock phosphates and in combination with Ca, Fe and Al.

Phosphorus is also obtained from soil wash, industrial wastes and detergents. In soil it occurs in insoluble form and is dissolved through chemicals released by micro-organisms and plant roots.

This is absorbed by plants and changed to organic form. To increase availability of soil, phosphate fertilizers are added.

Phosphorus Cycle

Soil from lakes, ocean beds and guano of marine birds are also good source of phosphorus. From plants it enters food chain. Action of decomposers on dead bodies and animal excreta also release phosphorus.

Phosphates incorporated in bones and teeth are resistance to decay and may remain outside the natural cycle for a long time but slowly released during weathering of their rocks.
