Xantho
. Denoting yellows.

Xanthophyll. Carotenoid plant pigment

Xanthophyta. Yellow-green algae (division of algae). Mostly unicellular, non-motile; others are colonial, filamentous, or tubular, coenocytic. Cell wall materials mainly cellulose and peptic substances, in some species impregnated with silica; often composed, in unicellular forms, of two halves but this is rarely obvious without chemical treatment. Posses chlorophyll together with b- carotene and several xanthophylls.

Xen. Denoting strange

X-chromosome. A sex-chromosome founded paired in the homogametic sex and sex single in the heterogametic sex. Unlike Y-chromosome contains numerous genes, which show sex-linkage.

Xenia. Changes due to effect of foreign pollen in visible characters of endosperms. Result from influence of gene complement of male nuclear which fuses with primary endosperms nucleus as a prelude to endosperms formation.

Xiphosura. Order of Arachnida, all extent except Limulus Marine. Appeared in Ordovician. Board prosoma to which is hinged the abdomen, bearing a terminal spike

Xerosere. A plant succession that begins on a dry site.

X-rays. Electromagnetic radiation of shorter wavelength that ultraviolet radiation and longer wavelength than gamma radiation. The range of wavelength 10-11 m to 10-9 m X-rays can pass through many forms of matter and they are therefore used medically and industrially to examine internal structures. X-rays produced for these purposes by an X-ray tube.

Xylose. A pentose sugar that is present in plant cell walls formula C5H10O5.
