Uropygium.
The fleshy and bony swelling at the rear of a bird that supports the tail feathers.

Uterus (Womb). The organ of female mammals in which the embryo develops. Paired in most mammals but single in humans, it is situated between the bladder and rectum and is connected to the fallopian tubes and to the vagina. the lining shows cyclical changes (see menstrual cycle; oestrous cycle) associated with egg production and provides a thick spongy layer in which the fertilized egg becomes embedded.
The outer wall of the uterus is thick and muscular, by contracting, it forces the fully grown fetus through the vagina to the outside.

Utriculus (utricle). A chamber of the inner ear from which the semicircular canals arise. It bears patches of sensory epithelium concerned with detecting changes in the direction and speed of movement.

Uvula. A fleshy structure hanging from the back of the soft palate in man.

Vaccine. A preparation containing inactivated.

Vacuole. Fluid-filled space within the cytoplasm, bounded by a membrane. A single vacuole, taking up most of volume of cell, is present in many plant cells; contains solution isotonic with cytoplasm.

Vagina. The tube leading from the uterus to the outside. Sperm are deposited in the vagina during copulation and the fully developed fetus is born through it. In a number of mammals the vagina may be sealed when the animal is not sexually receptive and only open during oestrus. Its lining produces mucus, which prevents friction and the entry of infective organisms.

Vagus Nerve. Tenth cranial nerve of vertebrates. In mammals mainly parasympathetic supplying oesophagus, stomach, heart; and sensory, from, e.g. lungs and heart.

Valvate. Having the edges in contact in the bud, but not overlapping.

Valve. (Bot.).
(1) One of several pats into which capsule separates after dehiscence by longitudinal splitting.
(2) Also applied for each half of wall of diatom cell (frustule). (Zool Heart). Flap or pocket of heart wall at entry and exit of each chamber of vertebrate heart, preventing backflow, mitral valve, tricuspid valve. (Venous). Pocket-like flap within a vein, preventing back-flow, in birds and mammals.

Vane. The part of a bird’s feather formed by the barbs and excluding the Raclis.

Variations. Differences between individuals of same species, apart from those referable to life cycle. May be due to the differences in environment during development and/or differences in the genes or cytoplasmic equipment with which the individual one starts life.
