K. A symbol indicating the maximum number of individuals in the Lotka Voleterra equations.

Kary-denoting a nut.

Karyokinesis. Mitosis.

Karyological. Concerned with the nucleus, particularly with the chromosomes.

Karyoplast. A nucleous surrounded by a thin layer of cytoplasm and membrane.

Karyosome.  A chromatic aggregation in the resting nucleus.

Karyotype. The characteristic of the set of chromosomes (chromosomel size, shapes and number) of a typical somatic cell of a given species, individual or cell strain.
A diagrammatic representation of a karyotype may be called a karyogram or ideogram.

Kata dromous . Moving from fresh water to the sea in order to breed.

Keel. (carina). The projection of bone from the sternum (breast bone)of a bird or bat, to which the powerful flight muscles are attached. The sterna of flightless birds (e.g. ostrich and emu) lack keels.

Kelvin scale. An absolute scale of temperature where range of 10 C, 00K = 273.150 or 459 .670F.

Keratin. Any of a group of fibrous proteins occuring in hair, feathers, hooves, and horns. Keratins have coiled polypeptides linked by disulphide bonds between adjacent cysteine amino acids.

Aggregates of these super coils from microfibrils, which are embedded in a protein matrix. This produces a strong but elastic structure.

Ketose. A monosa ccharide with a ketonic structure.

Kidney. Organ excretion and/or water regulations in vertebrates, consisting of numerous nephrons and their blood supply.

Kinesis. Locomotory movement of an organism or cell in response to a stimulus, such that the speed or frequency of turning, depends on strength of stimulus; but stimulus does not control direction of movement. Cf. Taxis.

Kinetodesmata. The threads connecting Kinetosomes in ciliates.

Kingdom. The lightest grouping in biological classification.

Kinomere.  A spindle attachment in the region of a chromosome that attaches it to spindle.

Klinotatic response.  A positive orientation movement of an organism resulting from a stimulus.

Krebs Cycle.
(Citric acid cycle). A series in oxidation of carbohydrates. Complex cycle enzyme-controlled reactions by which, from pyruvic acid provided by glycolysis, carbon dioxide is produced, and, through formation of reduced NAD, ATP, a source of energy, is synthesized. Pyruvic acid is fed source of energy, is synthesized. Pyruvic acid is fed into this cycle after combination with CoA as acetyl CoA.
The first step in the cycle is citric acid, and the final step is the reconstitution of citric acid by combination of oxalo acetic acid with acetyl CoA. The cycle is also concerned with the synthesis of some amino acids. This system is situated in the mitochondria.
