Hydrophyte.
(1) Plant whose habitat is water or very wet places, characteristically possessing aerenchyma
(2) Class of Raunkiaer’s Life Forms.

Hydroponics. System of large-scale plant cultivation developed from ‘water-culture’ methods of growing plants in the laboratory, in which their roots dip into a solution of nutrient salts or in which the plants are allowed to root in some relatively inert material, e.g. quartz sand, which is irrigated with the nutrient solution.

Hydrosere. A sere commencing in water or moist sites.

Hymernium. Layer of regularly arranged spore-producing structures found in fruit bodies of many ascomycetes and Basidiomycete fungi.

Hydrotropism. The growth of plant of the perisasc of colonial coelenterates which surrounds and protects the polyp.

Hymenoptera. Order of insects, including bees, wasps, ants Two pairs of wings, membranous, coupled together; larva generally grub-like. Some members very highly specialised for social life; some others are, as larvae, parasites of insects e.g. ichneumon flies.

Hyoid Arch.
Visceral arch next behind jaws of vertebrates. Dorsal part froms hyomandibula; ventral part in adult tetrapods forms huyoid bone, usually supporting tongue. Contains facial nerve, and forms many muscles of the face.

Hyostylic Jaw-Suspension. Found in most fish. Upper and lower jaws on each side are attached at their hinge to one end of the hyomandibula, the other end of which is anchored to the neurocranium.

Hyperemia. An increased blood flow to an organ or tissue.

Hyperparasite. Organism which lives parasitically in or on another parasite.

Hyperplasia. Increase in amount of tissue by increase in number of cells, which individually keep their usual size (cf. Hypertrophy) e.g. when part of mammalian liver is removed, rest undergoes hyperplasia. In plants, occurs in response to certain parasites.

Hyperpoea. An increased ventilation of the lungs.
