Cervix.
(C.Utri). A narrow cylindrical posterior part of the uterus of mammals, which leads into the vagina. Contains numerous glands supplying mucus to vagina.

Cestoda. A phylum of the platy helminthes containing the parasitic tape worms, the adults of which are intestinal parasites of vertebrates. They have complex life cycles usually involving intermediate hosts that are preyed upon by the primary host which thus becomes infected.

Cetacea.
An order of marine mammals comprising of whales porpoises, dolphins. They are completely aquatic and have many special features connected with this mode of life, such as layer of fat(blubber) in the skin, no hind limbs and only traces of pelvic gridle; four-limbs paddle-like; tail-fin transverse (unlike fishes): often a dorsal fin.

Chaeta. A bristle, made of chitin, characteristic of chaetopod Annelida (Polychaeta, Oligochaeta) in which they occur in groups projecting from the skin, segmentally arranged. In some cases assist locomotion, e.g. earthworm. Term may also be applied to bristles of other animals, e.g. of Brachiopoda.

Chaetognatha. Arrow-worms. Small phylum of marine animals of doubtful affinities, Includes Sagitta, abundant in plankton.

Chaetopoda. A group of Annelida including bristle worms (order Polychaeta) and earthworms (order Oligochaeta). Well segmented; coelom spacious; chaetae present.

Chain reaction. A chemical or atomic reaction in which the products of each state promote a subsequent reaction. Initially there is a slow induction period but as the reaction progresses the reaction rate is accelerated.

Chalaza.
1. A twisted stand of fibrous albumen in a bird’s egg that is attached to the membrane at either end of the yolk and thus holds the yolk in position in the albumen.

2. The part of a plant ovule where the nucellus and integuments merge.

Chalone. One of a group of chemicals occurring in living animal tissues which specifically inhibit Mitosis.

Character index. A value made up of the sum of ratings of several genetic characters which is used in numerical Taxonomy to indicate degrees of difference between related texa.

Charophyta. A group of the Algae, including the stoneworts which inhabits ponds.

Chela. A pincer, e.g. of lobster.

Chelicerae. Most anterior pair of head appendages of arachnids. Often claw-like. The poison weapons of spiders.

Chameophytes. Class of Raunkiaer’s Life Forms.

Character displacement. The divergence of characteristics in sympatric species as a result of the selective effects of competition.

Chelonia. Tortoises and turtles. Order of reptiles with body enclosed in plates of bone usually covered by epidermal horny plates (tortoise-shell). Shoulder and pelvic girdles unique in being inside the ribs. No teeth.

Chemoautotrophic. (Chemosynthetic). Obtaining energy from a simple inorganic reaction, the nature of which varies according to species, e.g. oxidation of hydrogen sulphide to Sulphur by Thiobacillus. Several kinds or autotrophic bacteria are chemoautotrophic.

Chemoreceptor. Sensory receptor which detects and differentiates substances according to their chemical structure, by contact with their molecules, e.g. smell, taste.

Chemotaxis. Taxis, the stimuls having the form of a gradient of chemical concentration, e.g. movement of polymorph leucocytes towards bacteria in response to substance arising from reaction between bacteria and complement; or of fern spermatozoids to archegonia in response to malic acid diffusing from archegonial necks.

Chemotrophic. Of organisms, obtaining energy by chemical reactions independent of light. The reactions may be based on inorganic substances (this is chemoautotrophic) or organic substances obtained from the environment.

Chiasma. (plural Chiasmata). (1) Connections between chromatids of homologous chromosomes, visible during meiosis (q.v.), where the interchange involved in crossing over has occurred.

Chiroptera. Bats, Order of placental mammals. Characterized by membranous wing spread between arms, legs, and sometimes tail, and supported by greatly elongated fingers.

Chlorocruorin.
Respiratory pigment (green fluorescing red) in blood of certain Polychaeta. A protein containing iron; closely related to hemoglobin.
