Baboon: Primate mammalian with an elongate, dog like muzzle with nostrils at the tip.  The head is large and they walk on all toes. Also known as dog-faced monkeys.

Bacca: A berry formed from an inferior ovary.

B-Lymphocyte: Kind of lymphocyte originating from bone marrow. The precursor of the plasma cells that secrete antibody. See T-lymphocyte.

Bacillariophyta: The diatoms. Division of algae. Microscopic, unicellular plants, occurring singly or grouped into colonies. In addition to chlorophylls a and c Chloroplasts contain carotene and xanthophylls including fucoxanthin.
Cell wall of pectic materials impregenated with silica finely sculptured; composed of two halves, one of which overlaps the other. Asexual reproduction by cell division, sexual reproduction isogamous. Abundant in marine and fresh water plankton and benthos. With dinoflagellates and a few other algae provide basis for all life in sea.

Known as siliceous or diatomaceous earths,  and oil reserves or diatoms of past ages have contributed to the petroleum supplies of today.

Bacillus: Genus of  spore producing bacteria. Also used generally for rod shaped bacteria.

Backbone: Vertebral column found in the vertebrates from cyclotosomes till mammals. It is formed during development by the replacement of notochord. It is dorsal in position and encloses the spinal cord.

Backcross: Cross of a hybrid with one of its parents.
