Apoptosome A complex that comprises Apaf-1, cytochrome c released from the mitochondria, deoxyadenosine triphosphate (dATP) and procaspase-9 whose assembly is central to the activation of procaspase-9 and downstream apoptotic cell death.
Appendix A collection of immune system tissue near the junction of the small and large intestines, part of the MALT.
Applet A small application program that can be executed by selecting a link or by automatic executing when a HTML document is loaded by a browser. Applets are usually written in java permitting them to run on different operating systems and use GUl to provide input/output with the user.
Application Software installed for a specific purpose on a computer (such as word processing). This is distinct from the operating system or system software.

Appropriate hyponatraemia Hyponatraemia associated with ECF hyperosmolality resulting from increased plasma concentrations of urea, glucose, alcohol and other solutes or due to infusion of mannitol or amino acids. In these conditions, homeostatic mechanisms dilute ECF solute concentrations towards normal causing hypoproteinaemia.
Aptamer An oligonucleotide of DNA or RNA or a peptide that binds to and inactivates proteins. Aptamers are used to analyse the active site of the protein.
APUD (amine precursor uptake and decarboxylation) See ectopic hormones.
Apurinic site A site on the DNA in which a purine is missing but the sugar-phosphate backbone is intact.
Apyrimidinic site A site on the DNA in which a pyrimidine is missing but the sugar phosphate backbone is intact.

Aquaculture Growing of water plants and animals in large volumes of water (usually fresh water), rather than harvesting them from rivers or seas. The animals are provided clean, well-aerated water, food such as krill or powdered synthetic food, and food additives, such as astaxanthins. Aquaculture is regarded as a part of biotechnology because it has commercial value. It is used for the mass-production of macro-and micro-algae for chemicals, vitamins and pigments.
Aqueous Pertaining to water.
Aqueous two-phase separation A technique to partition proteins during purification using polyethylene glycol and dextran (or phosphate).

Arabidopsis thaliana A genus of flowering plants in the family Cruciferae. It is used as a model plant for genome research because it has a small genome (5 pairs of chromosomes; 2n=10) and can be cultured easily, with a generation time of two months.
Arabinosyladenine (ara A) A derivative of the normal purine nucleoside adenosine in which the sugar ribose is replaced by arabinose. Ara A is used as an antiviral antibiotic to treat encephalitis.
Arabinosylcytosine (ara C) A derivative of the normal pyrimidine nucleoside cytosine in which the ribose sugar is replaced with its optical isomer arabinose. Ara C is an antibiotic that blocks DNA synthesis.
Arachidonic acid A 20-carbon fatty acid with four double bonds that functions as a precursor for the synthesis of prostaglandins.

Arbitrarily primed PCR PCR using random primers, such as in RAPD analysis.
ARC AIDS-related complex. A series of symptoms related to HIV infection including malaise, night sweats, dementia, wasting, opportunistic diseases such as Kaposi’s sarcoma, pneumonia  and retinitis.
Archaebacteria A group of bacteria that are very different from, and more primitive than other living bacteria, believed to have evolved from Eubacteria and from the eukaryotes. They constitute a third group of organisms and include methanogens, which produce methane from carbon dioxide and hydrogen and halophiles that live in high-salt environments.
Archive A collection of files that may be stored in a single compressed file in a special archive format. Also see zip, gz.
ARF protein Monomeric GTPase that regulate COPI coat assembly and clathrin coat assembly at Golgi membranes.

Arginase A urea cycle enzyme that catalyses cleavage of arginine to regenerate ornithine and release urea.
Argininosuccinase A urea cycle enzyme that catalyses cleavage of argininosuccinate to form arginine and fumarate.
Argininosuccinate synthase A urea cycle enzyme that catalyses condensation of citruline with aspartate to form argininosuccinate in a reaction involving ATP hydrolysis.
Arithmetic mean The quantity obtained by adding together all the given items and dividing the total by the number of items.
ARMS See Amplification Refractory Mutation Sustem.
Aromatase complex A microsomal enzyme system that catalyses the conversion of testosterone to oestradiol. This involves three successive hydroxylations and requires three molecules each of NADPH and O2.
Aromatic Containing 2n+2 electrons in a cyclic ring system.
ARP complex (ARP2/3 complex) A complex of proteins that nucleates actin filament growth from the minus end.
Array Computational equivalent of a table that can have more than two dimensions. Also see matrix and microarray.
Array assay Arrangement of oligonucleotides or cDNA on a solid surface to identify complementary sequences by fluorescent scanning.
Arrayed library Individual primary recombinant clones placed in two-dimensional arrays in microtiter plates. Each primary clone can be identified by the identify of theplate and the clone location in rows and columns on the plate. Arrayed libraries of clones are used for screening for a specific gene or genomic region of interest.
Arrestins A family or proteins that bind to the phosphorylated carboxyl terminal region of serpentine receptors. This prevents the interaction of the receptors with G proteins thereby terminating signal transduction.
Arrhythmia Deviation from the normal rhythm of the heart beat.
ARS Autonomously replicating sequence or segment. A cloned DNA sequence that initiates and maintains extrachromosomal replication of a DNA molecule in a host cell, most often in yeast cells.
Artefactual hyponatraemia Hyponatraemia that occurs during withdrawal of blood from the limb into which fluid containing low sodium concentration is being infused.
Arteriosclerosis Thickening and hardening of the arterial wall.
Arthritis Inflammation of joints.
