Character Designer designs all the characters in the film right from the principal character to the innocuous member of a crowd. Characters are not limited to human-beings; they could be animals, fantasy monsters, space aliens etc. which also perform an important role. Besides these characters, there are some non-living things too (known as props) which also have their own importance. Prop refers to "any non-living item that finds itself kicked, carried, thrown or moved during a scene". Like, a 'flido', in 'The Arabian Nights' or heaps of dishes falling on Tom's head in a famous cartoon sequence of 'Tom & Jerry'. Thus, Character Designer plays a significant role in an animated film to present the character in accordance with its nature.

As in film industry, directors hire costume designers for designing costume best suited to the role, in the sameway, character designer must draw the right type of costumes for all the characters. An ideal portfolio of a character designer should have enough space for the costumed figures, which is his or her prime concern. It gives good impression, if you have created your own designs. Your original work should not only reflect your imagination but also your innovative approach.

I f you wish to become a Prop designer, who creates non-living objects, you should load up your portfolio with attractive figures of cars, boats, aircrafts or tanks along with mundane items like table settings, furniture, TV, radio, etc., preferably add up designs that are used in day to day life so as to give it a natural look.
