Introduction
Recombinant DNA technology is one of the most fascinating fields in biotechnology. It stems from an understanding of functions of DNA and discoveries in molecular biology. The foremost technique in recombinant DNA technology is the transfer of a sequence of DNA (gene) from one organism to another. Hence, it is also called as Molecular cloning or gene cloning or broadly genetic engineering.

Genetic engineering is especially useful to introduce a gene from higher organisms in bacteria or yeast. Since manipulation may result in large-scale production of several pharmaceutically important compounds, the exploitation of microorganisms for the benefit of mankind becomes vital.

Genetic engineering is essentially an insertion of a specific piece of foreign DNA into a cell in such a way that the inserted DNA is able to replicate and pass on to daughter cells during cell division. The inserted DNA is known as Transgene and any organism containing the Transgenic is called Transgenic or Genetically Modified Organism (GMO).

Cloning is the use of technology to make an exact genetic copy of a living organism. The term may also be applied to making a copy of simple cells, a gene or a segment of DNA.
The essential steps of gene cloning are as follows:
1. Isolation of the target gene from the DNA of an organism
2 . Insertion of the target gene into vector (Plasmids/cosmids)
3. Transformation of the inserted DNA in vector
4. Screening of recombinants and selection of transformed cells
5. Expression of a cloned gene through controlled elements
