Kahn Test - Flocculation test which is used for diagnosis of syphilis in which cardiolipin (a non-treponemal) antigen is used. Such tests are also called standard serological tests (SSL).

Kainit - A low-grade fertilizer containing 12.30% potash and about 50% common salt used mainly on sugar beet. Sometimes also containing about 10% magnesium.

Kale - A crop of the Cabbage group characterised by a strong tall stem and open curied leaves, grown as a Fodder Crop., Fed either in the field or after cutting, or made into Silage. There are several types, viz, Hungry Gap Kale, Marrowstem Kale, Rape Cale, and Thousand-Headed Kale

Ked - A brown, flat, wingless, hairy, blood-sucking fly (Melopoagus ovinus), parasitic on sheep, and causing constant irritation. Also called cade, kade, kaid, seep louse and sheep tick.

Keep - Grass or other Fodder Crops on which livestock are grazed.

Kelps - The largest of the brown algae which usually consist of expanded leaf-like blades connected by a stalk to a hold fast.

Kemp - Coarse, brittle, white fibres, shed during the growth of a Fleece, which are difficult to dye.

Keratin - A tough, sulphur-containing, fibrous protein. The major constituent of the outer layer of skin and horn.

Ketchup - Strained concentrated extract of particular fruit vegetable which is having spiced vinegar.

Kibbled - Broken into coarse fragments, e.g., kibbled maize, kibbled lime.

Kid - A young goat less than 1 year old.

Kieserite - (MgSO 4' HP). Magnesium sulphate, a greyish white crystalline powder containing about 16% magnesium, used as a fertilizer. Regarded as a concentrated form of Epsom Salts, having less water for crystallisation.

Killing Out Percentage - The weight of a dressed carcase as a percentage of the Liveweight of the animal. (Deadweight). Anindication of the amount of meat on a carcase after the removal of the head (except in pigs), limbs, hide, blood and offal. For beef cattle the average is 54-57%.

Kip - The hide of a young animal.

Knacker - An animal slaughterer.

Kitchen Gardening - Practice of growing vegetables in home gardens or compound gardens on a small scale.

Kline Test - Microscopic flocculation test for the diagnosis of syphilis.

Knives - Reciprocating sections which slide to and fro across the flat

faces of the Fingers on the Cutter Bar of a Mower, Binder or Combine Harvester.

Knock Down. - Percentage of immediate kill achieved by the application of an insecticide.

Knot - Portion of the branch which is embedded in the wood by the, natural growth of the trees. The knot is 'loose' or 'tight' depending on whether the branch was dead or living at the time it was embedded.

Knotter - A mechanism on a Baler or Binder which knots the twine binding the Sheaves. Also called knotter bill.


Kohl Rabi - A fodder crop of the Cabbage group with a much swollen, turnip-shaped, scarred stem, from which grow long-stemmed leaves.

Ksloes - A mainly black, shaggy haired, small breed of cattle once found on the Hebridean islands and which contributed, with mainland cattle, to the development of Highland cattle. Sometimes used to mean Highland cattle.
