Jacobsen Germinator - Special device which is being used for seed testing wherein water is supplied to a blotting paper substrative by using wicks.

Jam - Concentrated fruit pulp having a fairly heavy body form rich in natural fruit flavour. Pectin in the fruit imparts it a good set and high sugar concentration (more than 68%) and facilitates its preservation. It is prepared by boiling the fruit pulp and juice with sufficient quantity of sugar to a reasonable consistency to hold the fruit tissues in position. A good jam must be having bright colour, rich flavour typical of a fruit, should not be syrupy or stiff. It should be free from crystallization of sugar.

Japanese B Encephalitis - Virus infection which is affecting not only anim is but also human beings. The disease is seasonal and the outbreaks generally remain confined to the warmer months. The disease causes fever, loss of appetite, lethargy, sleepy appearance and jaundice.

Jaundice - Yellowish or orange discolouration of the tissues and secretions. It is especially visible in eyes, skin and mucous membranes. It is caused due to circulation of bile pigment in the blood.

Jellies - Semi solid product which is prepared by cooking essentially a clear fruit extract and sugar. In jelly making pectin forms the most essential constituent. A perfect jelly should be transparent,attractive in colour, give strong flavour of the fruit and firm enough to retain a sharp edge when cut but quivers when pressed. The fruits rich in pectin and acid like sour apple, grapes, guava, lemon, orange, loquat etc. are best for making jelly.

Jersey - A relatively small, early maturing breed of dairy cattle imported from Jersey. Various coat colours exist from light fawn to darkish red, almost black, sometimes with white markings. Characterized by a lightish coloured ring encircling the black muzzle, with a small head and dished face. Leanly built with a large well developed udder. The average annual milk yield (Milk Yields) in 1980/81 was 3879 kg and the rich creamy milk contains 5.22% butterfat and is much used for butter making.

Jersian - A hybrid type of beef cattle derived from a Jersey bull crossed. with a Friesian cow. Also called an F-J hybrid.

Johne's Disease - An infections bacterial disease (Mycobacterium paratuberculosis), mainly of cattle (other animals including sheep are sometimes, affected), characterized by severe inflammation of the intestines continuous diarrhoea, weakness and rapid loss of condition leading to emanciation.

Jointer - A term for a skim coulter.

Joint-ill, Joint-felon - A disease of young livestock caused by various bacteria entering the body via the unhardened navel, and characterized by abscess formation at the naval and swellings in some limb joints. Also called navel-ill.

Jungle - (1) Low or thin forest (2) Any impenetrable thick or tangled mass of vegetation (3) Any dense intermingled growth.

Juvenile Form - Young plant that is having leaves and other feature different from those of a mature plant of the same species.

Juvenile Hormone - Hormone which is secreted in insects by small cervical glands called CorporaAllata. Its presence in the body of the insects results in the conservation of larval character and the inhibition of metamorphosis.

Juvenile Stage - Special stage in the life history of some algae from which the ordinary plant is developed as an outgrowth

Juvenility - In some plants, the differences in the internal stages of young seedlings from that of mature plant have been manifested by striking differences in leaf shape or greater thorniness in younger plants. This immature condition is referred to as juvenility. It is important in several aspects of plant propagation.
